| The benefits of prototyping |
When a client approaches us with an application concept or set of requirements, we first attempt to draw out enough information for the team to move into Phase 1 of Enzyme IT's SDLC (Software Development Life Cycle): Prototyping and Specifications.
We use a wireframing and prototyping tool known as Axure which allows us to achieve 3 goals:
- Rapidly prototype the application's functionality
- Tag elements with both functional and technical specifications
- Wireframe interface screens
We like to say we hit "3 birds with 1 stone", and the end result after a couple of rounds of revisions is:
- A functional prototype of the application in HTML format, providing stakeholders and the development team with a skeletal view of how the application will function
- User interface wireframes to assist our designer in creating GUIs (Graphical user interfaces)
- Specifications documentation for both stakeholders and the development team to refer back to
This is Agile Development at its best. Prototyping applications through iterations, provides a low cost model for bringing stakeholders and developers onto the same page. Making a change to a prototype in Axure takes minutes, versus the hours that might be spent making a change to code.
We strive to increase productivity and clarification between stakeholders and developers, and reduce costs for our customers by lowering the chances of change requests further into the SDLC.
